Mock Draft!
Please Note that we make no
attempt to guess what "Geniuses" like
Charley Casserly will do. This Mock is our take on what each NFL team
SHOULD do with their 1st round pick.

1 |
OT |
D'Brickashaw Ferguson |
Virginia |
OT,OG,DE,TE, WR |
The Texans have made a real mess of the draft for years. Finally, they have a chance to get it right by taking the best player in the '06 draft and securing David Carr's backside for a decade. Could probably do a deal with the Titans and still get DaBrick for a shot at Matt Leinart. Ferguson is the best LT prospect since Bryant McKinnie in 2002, and the Texas would be fools to pass on such a complete player. |

DE |
Mario Williams |
N.C. State |
DT,LB,CB,OT,RB |
After solving their QB situation with Drew Brees, the Saints will be looking elsewhere with this pick. They’ll probably trade out of this spot if they can, but if they get stuck, Williams makes the most sense here. They don’t need Bush when they’ve got Deuce McAlister coming back, and although they could use a DT more than an end, Williams is a huge player with a tremendous potential for impact from day one. What else can you ask of the #2 overall pick in the draft? |
3 |
QB |
Matt Leinart |
USC |
QB,RB,ILB,C,S |
The run on QB's officially begins. Leinart is by far the most polished of the first round QB’s, with great football smarts, a decent arm and an exceptional feel for the pocket. Leinart always seems to step away from pressure at just the right time. He's the best at this since John Elway. Norm Chow is officially a happy guy when they grab his favorite QB. Could look to Bush, but they must get their QB of the future in place. |
4 |
RB |
Reggie Bush |
USC |
QB,RB,OT,CB,WR |
Even though they already have Pennington and Patrick Ramsey coming onboard, the Jets would still be well served if they took one of the two remaining 1st round QB’s. Still, they also need a legit alternative to the fading Curtis Martin, and Bush could be it. Personally, I think anybody who takes this guy #1 overall is nuts. Some look at Bush and see the next Barry Sanders. All I see is the next Napoleon Kauffman. He’s much less of a disaster risk taken here at #4. |

5 |
LB |
A.J. Hawk |
Ohio State |
LB,CB,DT,OG,RB |
If the Packers start over with Aaron Rogers at QB, taking an offensive player will be tempting here, especially if Javon Walker uh, walks. Still, they have settled their RB issues for the moment and resigned DE Aaron Kampman, and will be looking to solidify a weak defense. Hawk is a do it all OLB, and added to Kampman and KGB, the Packers should be a lot tougher against the pass in '06. Must seriously consider Young as well. Rogers may not be the answer and new coach Mike Malarkey didn’t draft him. |
6 |
TE |
Vernon Davis |
Maryland |
LB,CB,OT,WR,S |
The 49'ers need help everywhere, but first they have to get a weapon or two for their young QB, Alex Smith. Davis’s stock has skyrocketed and he could give Smith a big soft-handed target across the middle. Too bad they still need so many more players just to be respectable. |
7 |
RB |
Vince Young |
Texas |
QB,LB,DE,TE,CB |
Managing General has-been Count Chocula hasn’t taken a QB high in decades. It’s way past time. Davis may never live down passing on Ben Roethlisberger for 1st round stiff Robert Gallery, but if he can get Young some coaching, he just may be able to resurrect his "vertical stretch" offense from the trash-heap of history. The defense will have to wait for later to get fixed. |
8 |
DT |
Haloti Ngata |
Oregon |
DT,OT,S, C,WR |
The Bills really need defensive help up front, and Ngata is a monster. Should immediately stiffen the run defense and make life easier for the Bills LB’s. FSU’s Broderick Bunkley could fit in here too, but Ngata figures to be more of a force against the run, which is what the Bills need. Will make a nice bookend next to Larry Triplett. |
9 |
DB |
Michael Huff |
Texas |
OT,CB,LB,DE, |
The Lions are thinking defense, but could also really use an upgrade to their OL. With none of the remaining OL’s meriting this pick, they switch gears and go with fast-rising Huff. Lions need somebody in the defensive backfield that can stay healthy. |
10 |
QB |
Jay Cutler |
Vanderbilt |
OL,QB,LB,CB |
After grabbing Edgerrin James the Cardinals Denny Green knows he must find a young successor to Kurt Warner at QB. Cutler has the size, arm and smarts to be very successful in Green’s QB friendly system. Now, if only they can find somebody to block… |
11 |
CB |
Jimmy Williams |
Virginia Tech |
CB,DT,S,LB,OL |
The Rams need help at a lot of positions, but Williams can make an immediate impact. There really isn’t a DT that merits this pick, so look for them to go with the sure thing. Scott Linehan has a big task to match the nutty professor's genius that made the Rams exceptional. This pick, like their season, is likely to be pedestrian. |
12 |
LB |
Ernie Sims |
Fla. State |
DE,LB,OT,CB |
Romeo Crennel's Browns play a 3-4 defense, but can you name one of their linebackers from last season? Neither can I. Willie McGinest alone won’t fix this unit, but the fast rising Sims can add a much needed dose of athleticism. |
13 |
DT |
Broderick Bunkley |
Fla. State |
DT,OT,LB,WR |
The Ravens could be tempted by a WR, but with his job on the line Brian Billick will looking for an impact player. Bunkley is a fast rising player and will fill a need area after the losses of Maake Kemoeatu and Anthony Weaver in free agency. |
14 |
WR |
Chad Jackson |
Florida |
WR,RB,OT,DT |
This pick could not be more obvious. The Eagles desperately need somebody who can run and catch. Last year was not an aberration, but the first year in a decline that's likely to be rapid and painful. If only they had taken Chad Johnson or Chris Chambers in '01 instead of Freddie Mitchell. They could also be tempted by one of the RB’s, but Jackson adds an outside speed dimension they are desperate for. |
15 |
DE |
Santonio Holmes |
Ohio State |
WR,DE,TE,RB,DT |
The Broncos could be tempted by a lot of the players here, and with Jackson off the board they could consider a DE. Could also consider one of the RB’s, but why not just draft another 1,000 yard guy in the 5th round instead? Holmes is not as big as Jackson but is fast enough and dangerous enough to open up defenses a bit more. |
16 |
CB |
Ashton Youboty |
Ohio State |
CB,S,LB,OG,OT |
After grabbing their QB with the Daunte Culpepper trade, the Dolphins must choose between blocking for him or shoring up the weak areas of their defense. Will Allen will not be enough to make fans forget about the glory days of Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain. Youboty will add some youth to an aging secondary. |
17 |
LB |
DeMeco Ryans |
Alabama |
LB,QB,OG,CB |
Every year the Vikings LB’s suck, no matter who they plug in there. Ryans is a smart, sound player who won’t freelance much, which has been the biggest problem the Vikes have had with their failed LB picks. With an extra 2nd rounder, will the Vikes make a move up the board to secure their QB of the future? |
18 |
OT |
Winston Justice |
USC |
OT,S,WR,LB,DT |
If Bill Parcells is going to make a run this year, he needs to shore up a horrible offensive tackle situation. Jason Fabini doesn’t solve the problem. Justice is the right guy in the right slot. |
19 |
OT |
Marcus McNeil |
Auburn |
OG,OT,WR,S,CB |
The O-line was the Chargers weakest unit last year, and McNeil is an instant upgrade. Now, if only they can clean up the mess in their front office. Holmes will tempt them here as well if he’s still on the board. |
20 |
CB |
Johnathan Joeseph |
South Carolina |
WR,DT,DE,LB,CB |
The Chiefs have a lot of age on the offensive side of the ball, but adding to their still weak defense couldn't hurt either. Joespeh will help solidify their weakest need area. |
21 |
RB |
DeAngelo Williams |
Memphis |
LB,WR,CB,RB,OT |
The Pats need consistent production from the RB position, and Corey Dillon may be hitting the end of the line. They probably never dreamed they’d be able to choose between the "big three" of Williams, White and Maroney. White would be a Dillon-like force, but Williams adds a speed and elusiveness dimension White lacks. |
22 |
TE |
Leonard Pope |
Georgia |
WR,TE,RB,DT |
Yes, the Broncos' could use a pass rushing DE, but there isn't one worthy of this pick and it's not like Jeb Putzier and Stephen Alexander made anybody forget about Shannon Sharpe. Pope is the better value pick here and can work the middle of the field against the Stealers and Colts of the AFC. |
23 |
LB |
Chad Greenway |
Iowa |
S,WR,LB,OT,OG |
The Bucs would love it if Holmes or one of the tackles fell this far, but no such luck. Greenway upgrades an area of need and keeps the defense properly fed. Greenway has great instincts, and that's important again after the success Seattle had with Lofa Tatupu. |
24 |
DT |
Gabe Watson |
Michigan |
DT,DE,LB,QB |
The Bengals are desperate for some help up front on defense, and Watson has been impressive in the postseason evaluation process. He'll be a monster for teams to deal with. Added to recent FA addition Sam Adams, the Bengals will much tougher up the middle than last year. |
25 |
CB |
Antonio Cromartie |
Florida St. |
LB,CB,S,OT,OG |
The Giants could go with a LB, but there should be plenty in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Cromartie is a big cover guy with great measurables, and may even project to safety at the pro level. |
26 |
TE |
Dominique Byrd |
USC |
TE,WR,CB,OT,OG |
USC’s Byrd makes a lot of sense here. No matter who the QB is, he'll need a big target in the center of the field to offset the Bears pedestrian running game. Rex Grossman should love him. Could also look to improve their overrated defense by adding a CB. |
27 |
RB |
LenDale White |
USC |
WR,TE,RB,OG,LB |
The re-signing of Deshon Foster notwithstanding, the Panthers need more depth in their running game. White gives them a legit power guy who can hopefully stay healthy. Jake Delhomme wishes he'd been there last year when he had to deal with the swarming Seattle defense. |
28 |
DE |
Kamerion Wimbley |
Fla. State |
LB,TE,DE,OT,CB |
The Jags desperately need some toughness and attitude on the OL, so Deuce Lutui would look good here, but Wimbley gives them a Tony Brackens like force on the edge they haven’t since, well, Tony Brackens. |
29 |
DE |
Mathias Kiwanuka |
Boston College |
RB,OT,DE,CB,WR |
The Jets lose Abraham and gain Kiwanuka. He’ll have a hard time measuring up to his predecessor, but at least he’ll be happy to be in NY. |
30 |
RB |
Laurence Maroney |
Minnesota |
RB,OG,DT,LB,S |
The Colts have to be thanking their lucky stars that Maroney falls to them. They have plenty of holes to fill, but none bigger than the gaping chasm left by Edgerrin James. Maroney is a different kind of back, but he should still make the Colts offense sizzle as it always has. |
31 |
CB |
Kelly Jennings |
Miami |
CB,S,DE,WR |
The Seahawks were the best team in the NFL last year and have no gaping holes, even with the loss of OG Steve Hutchinson. CB would seem to be the biggest need area, but the Seahawks are in a position to go in BAA mode. Jennings will be downgraded because of his size, but he’s an excellent fit for the Seahawks as a replacement for Andre Dyson. |
32 |
CB |
Tye Hill |
Clemson |
CB,S,WR,DT,DE |
The Stealers have to be concerned after their vaunted defense got shredded in the Super Bowl. If it weren’t for very questionable holding calls, they would have given up over 500 yards and close to 30 points in the big game, and their secondary was the biggest problem. If they don’t find some guys who can cover, they’ll see a lot of 3 receiver sets and short passes in 2006. |
