NFL Draft Review

* = Junior declaration

The 2002 NFL draft was a mixed bag for Seahawks fans once again. In what has become a disturbing pattern in the Mike Holmgren era, the Seahawks made some good moves accentuated by what appear on the surface to be absolutely bone-headed selections.

The Seahawks draft process actually got started early with the trade of QB Brock Huard to Indianapolis for a fifth round pick. Huard had become the odd man out in Seattle, and wisely requested a chance to start over elsewhere.  He must have known that Holmgren was not going to give him the chance to embarrass the coach by beating out Matt Hassel-Mirer in training camp for the back-up QB job, so he asked for a trade. Behind a solid pass blocking line in Indy, Huard should flourish. At least the Seahawks got something for him.

Frustrated in their attempts to move up and get one of the impact players in the top 15 picks, the Seahawks stood by while a number of quality defensive players were taken right in front of them. When their turn did come about at #20 in the first round, the Seahawks surveyed the landscape and determined that the best fit for their choice, Colorado TE Daniel Graham, could possibly be had further down. They traded their selection to the Packers, who were looking to move up and grab Florida State WR Javon Walker. The Seahawks got a second round pick in the deal, which initially looked like a bit of a coup.

The plan was foiled however when the Patriots traded up to the 21st pick to grab Graham, the Ravens snapped up Miami FS Ed Reed, and the Saints took Georgia DE Charles Grant. Faced with having lost his three targeted players, Holmgren went to his back-up plan and selected University of Washington TE Jerramy Stevens. Many felt this was a reach as Holmgren dipped into what was considered the second round talent pool to grab Stevens with the 28th pick overall. However, the Seahawks had Stevens rated on a par with Graham in terms of physical skills, his second round grade being derived mostly from his well publicized off-field problems. In fact, some analysts feel that Stevens is a better athlete than Miami's Jeremy Shockey, who went 15th overall to the Giants. The Seahawks were obviously satisfied that Stevens off-field problems were behind him and that he represented a reasonable risk at 28 in the first round. So far, so good.

Having filled his roster's most glaring hole with his first round pick -- and having added a valuable second round pick in the process -- Holmgren had seemingly gotten off to a solid start on his fourth draft as Seahawks GM. But, when it came time to actually execute the picks he had garnered in the second round, Holmgren suddenly went in MOAA, mode -- Most Obscure Athlete Available.

As pick after pick went by the boards in round two, the Seahawks sat on their plethora of second day picks and failed to move up in the round even when value players like Clinton Portis and Anthony Weaver fell into striking range. Instead, they reached -- seemingly round after round -- for players that were rated far below where they were picked and had no established college reputations.

Assessment

It was obvious from the selections they made that the Seahawks draft board was completely out-of-whack with almost every other team's. Besides thinking that Graham would last until the 28th pick when they traded down, they totally overvalued the players they took in the second round.

By passing on Graham and thinking he would last until they picked at 28, the Seahawks were forced into the far more risky position of having to reach for Stevens. Holmgren followed that by reaching in the second round for Oregon RB Maurice Morris at #54. Morris was rated as no better than the 10th best RB on most draft sites, and was expected to be around when the Seahawks selected at #85 in the third round. The advantage gained of getting a high pick in return for dropping eight spots in the first round  -- the Packers choice at #60 -- was squandered when the Seahawks wasted it on unknown Nevada Las Vegas DE Anton Palepoi. Palepoi was ranked the 24th best DE on Mel Kiper's value board, 18th by the Sporting News, and was not even rated on several respected draft sites. Coming off a 2001 knee injury, Palepoi was considered a second day pick by almost all competent draft evaluators -- if they even rated him as draftable. Palepoi would have raised a lot of eyebrows if he was taken in round three, but the idea of him going #60 in round two was unthinkable to seemingly everyone but the Seahawks. The pick was even more inexplicable given that a number of higher ranked DE's were still available, namely BYU's Ryan Denny, Tennessee's Will Overstreet, and Kentucky's Dennis Johnson. The word is now that there were a couple of teams that wanted Polepoi in round three, but that "word" is apparently being spread by the Seahawks. The best hope is that Polepoi ends being this years Derrick Burgess, not this years Paul Toviessi.

Complicating the selection of Palepoi is the fact that because he passed on several quality DE prospects in the third round last year, Holmgren was forced to reach in a high round this year. Instead of having DeLawrence Grant, Karon Riley or Cedric Scott entering their second year and getting ready to contribute, the Seahawks are stuck with an obscure player from a small school who is coming off a major knee injury a few years ago. Essentially, the Seahawks paid the price of wasting their third round pick last year on fullback Heath Evans. For their part, the Seahawks insist that Palepoi is an explosive pass rusher, although his career numbers do not reflect that. Whatever the case, there is little doubt that he could have been had in a later round, if not deep into day two.

Things did not get a lot brighter as the rounds wore on. Holmgren insisted he was following a strategy, looking at weak spots on his roster where he felt they had marginal players and drafting to create competition with specific players. If my name were Ike Charlton, John Hilliard, Paul Miranda, or Jeff Feagles, I'd start looking for another job. Still, some of the choices were so obscure it's pointless to even list them. Seahawk fans are obviously hoping that Holmgren knows something the rest of the league does not, or it could be that we look back on this draft as lost opportunity. In Holmgren's case, that might be from the comfort of his new digs in Cincinnati.

Had we been running the Seahawks war room, we would probably have done the same thing as far as trading with Green Bay and picking up the extra second round pick. But with all those second day choices we would have definitely tried to trade up in round two and get our hands on Portis and Weaver. There is no indication that the Seahawks attempted to do this, simply because they evidently liked Morris and Polepoi better. Time will tell if this is a stroke of genius or another botched draft.

For the record, here's how we would have played it with the picks the Seahawks had:

  1. (28) Jerramy Stevens - TE - Washington - Fills a need area.

  2. (54) Michael Lewis - SS - Colorado - Lewis can step in for Marcus Robertson in a year, moving Reggie Tongue to FS.

  3. (60) Ryan Denny - DE - BYU - Denny is a more solid choice than Polepoi. Has the size to eventually play around 300. Better against the run.

  4. (85) Bryan Westbrook - RB - Villanova - If Morris is still around, Holmy can have him. But Westbrook if he isn't.

  5. (120) Ron Johnson - WR - Minnesota - Catches anything near him and is always open. Great size and adds depth in case there are any injuries to Seahawks WR corps.

Now, lets take a look at how the rest of league did.

2002 TEXANS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(1) DAVID CARR QB FRESNO STATE
2(1) JABAR GAFFNEY WR FLORIDA
2(18) CHESTER PITTS OT SAN DIEGO STATE
3(1) FRED WEARY OG TENNESSEE
3(18) CHARLES HILL DT MARYLAND
4(1) JONATHAN WELLS RB OHIO STATE
5(1) JARROD BAXTER FB NEW MEXICO
5(18) RAMON WALKER S PITTSBURGH
6(1) DeMARCUS FAGGINS CB KANSAS STATE
6(18) HOWARD GREEN OT LOUISIANA STATE
7(1) LAVAR GLOVER DB CINCINNATI
7(18) GREG WHITE DE MINNESOTA
7(50) AHMAD MILLER DT NEVADA-LAS VEGAS

Texans start with a franchise QB and a first round rated WR, but blow the chance to begin the franchise with their "triplets" by passing on Clinton Portis in favor of the slow footed Pitts. They got Ohio State's Wells in the fourth, but Portis would have given them more big-play ability and is simply a better player than Pitts or Wells. Texans failed to stock up on skill position players in a draft filled with them. Even Antonio Bryant would have made more sense than Pitts, who would probably have lasted until their pick in the third round. Also failed to draft a LB even though they want to play a 3-4.

Grade - B

Purely for Carr and Gaffney.

2002 PANTHERS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(2) JULIUS PEPPERS DE NORTH CAROLINA
2(2) DeSHAUN FOSTER RB UCLA
3(8) WILL WITHERSPOON OLB GEORGIA
4(2) DANTE WESLEY DB ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF
5(2) RANDY FASANI QB STANFORD
5(10) KYLE JOHNSON FB SYRACUSE
6(2) KEITH HEINRICH TE SAM HOUSTON STATE
7(2) PETE CAMPION OG NORTH DAKOTA STATE
7(47) BRAD FRANKLIN CB LOUISIANA LAFAYETTE

Panthers passed on a franchise QB in Harrington to take the local product Peppers. Usually, when a team goes 1-15, they blow up the roster and take the franchise QB if he's available in round one. The Panthers have chosen to keep the roster intact and build around a DE. What are the odds they'll be back here at the top of the draft next year?

Grade - B-

Only because I like Foster and Peppers will probably be a pretty good DE.

2002 LIONS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(3) JOEY HARRINGTON QB OREGON
2(3) KALIMBA EDWARDS DE SOUTH CAROLINA
3(3) ANDRE GOODMAN CB SOUTH CAROLINA
4(36) JOHN TAYLOR DT MONTANA STATE
5(3) JOHN OWENS TE NOTRE DAME
6(3) CHRIS CASH CB USC
7(3) LUKE STALEY RB BRIGHAM YOUNG
7(41) MATT MURPHY TE MARYLAND
7(48) VICTOR ROGERS OT COLORADO

I love Mike McMahon, but Harrington gives the Lions great depth at the most important position. For all the critics of Matt Millen, I have four things to say: "Jeff Backus, Dominic Raiola, Shaun Rogers, and Joey Harrington." That's a solid draft record.

Kalimba Edwards has problems getting traction on grass -- especially if it is wet, but playing nine games a year on turf in a dome will accentuate his skills while he puts more weight on. Luke Staley and Victor Rogers were excellent picks.

2002 BILLS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(4) MIKE WILLIAMS OT TEXAS
2(4) JOSH REED WR LOUISIANA STATE
2(29) RYAN DENNEY DE BRIGHAM YOUNG
3(32) COY WIRE S STANFORD
5(4) JUSTIN BANNAN DT COLORADO
6(4) KEVIN THOMAS CB NEVADA-LAS VEGAS
7(4) MIKE PUCILLO OG AUBURN
7(38) RODNEY WRIGHT WR FRESNO STATE
7(40) JARRETT FERGUSON FB VIRGINIA TECH
7(49) DOMINIQUE STEVENSON LB TENNESSEE

Monster tackle Williams better have a weight clause in his contract. I still maintain Ryan Sims is a better fit. Strength in this draft is at the top for Bills, who got good players, especially Reed and Denny. Failed to get a DT to fill the spot opposite Pat Williams, but they filled their QB need by trading for Drew Bledsoe. But who will run the ball for him?

2002 CHARGERS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(5) QUENTIN JAMMER CB TEXAS
2(7) TONIU FONOTI OG NEBRASKA
2(16) RECHE CALDWELL WR FLORIDA
3(6) BEN LEBER LB KANSAS STATE
4(5) JUSTIN PEELLE TE OREGON
5(7) TERRY CHARLES WR PORTLAND STATE
6(6) MATT ANDERLE OT MINNESOTA
7(5) SETH BURFORD QB Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo

They pass on McKinnie for Jammer? He's more of a Chris McAlister or Champ Bailey than a Charles Woodson or Shawn Springs. McKinnie has an aura of greatness about him. Fonoti is big, but there are flaws in his game, and Caldwell is a solid player. Once again, GM John Butler focused on getting name players from big schools in the early rounds.

Grade - C+

They got bodies for the spots they had gaps, but could have done better.

2002 COWBOYS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(8) ROY WILLIAMS SS OKLAHOMA
2(5) ANDRE GURODE C COLORADO
2(31) ANTONIO BRYANT WR PITTSBURGH
3(10) DEREK ROSS CB OHIO STATE
4(31) JAMAR MARTIN FB OHIO STATE
5(33) RALPH "PETE" HUNTER DB VIRGINIA UNION
6(7) TYSON WALTER OT OHIO STATE
6(35) DEVEREN JOHNSON WR SACRED HEART
6(39) BOB SLOWIKOWSKI TE VIRGINIA TECH

Cowboys did a nice job. They traded down two spots and still got the player they wanted, while picking up a third from Kansas City. Williams will fit right in, Gurode will add depth to a thinning front line, and Bryant will give the QB a big target to go with speedsters Galloway and Ismail. Derrick Ross can also play.

Grade - A+

Now if they only had a QB ...

2002 VIKINGS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(7) BRYANT "MOUNT" McKINNIE OT MIAMI (FLA.)
2(6) RAONALL SMITH OLB WASHINGTON STATE
3(5) WILLIE OFFORD SS SOUTH CAROLINA
4(7) BRIAN WILLIAMS DB NORTH CAROLINA STATE
4(34) ED TA'AMU OG UTAH
6(5) NICK ROGERS OLB GEORGIA TECH
7(7) CHAD BEASLEY DT VIRGINIA TECH
Vikings stay put at #7 and get the best player in the draft. Vikings can now plug Corey Withrow in at center and move Pro-Bowl center Matt Birk to RT, giving them 3/5th's of a quality OL. Smith was a reach. They would have been better off taking his Cougar teammate Lamont Thompson or Washington's Tripplet. And passing on local product Ron Johnson in the fourth was folly. He would have been perfect lining up opposite Randy Moss. McKinnie lifts the whole grade by himself.

2002 CHIEFS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL

2(11) EDDIE FREEMAN DT ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM
4(9) OMAR EASY FB PENN STATE
5(8) SCOTT FUJITA OLB CALIFORNIA
7(10) MAURICE RODRIGUEZ OLB FRESNO STATE
Chiefs only had a few picks but made the most of them, especially the first two. Freeman and Sims should really help plug the middle and make the defense much stronger. Should have taken a WR on day two, though.

2002 JAGUARS DRAFT PICKS

6(8) CLENTON BALLARD DT Southwest TEXAS State
7(11) KENDALL NEWSON WR MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE
7(35) STEVE SMITH DB OREGON
7(36) HAYDEN EPSTEIN K MICHIGAN

Jags start to rebuild their DL, but why reach for Henderson over Haynesworth? Jags needed help on both lines, and got it ealry, but it is hard to get excited about anyone they took. Pedestrian.

2002 BENGALS DRAFT PICKS

3(2) MATT SCHOBEL TE TEXAS CHRISTIAN
4(11) TRAVIS DORSCH K PURDUE
6(9) MARQUAND MANUEL S FLORIDA
7(8) JOEY EVANS DE NORTH CAROLINA

Bengals took some heat for this draft but once again, they may have done better than people think. There is no guarantee that Jones would have lasted another 6-10 picks, and he fills a need. He can play OG this year while he learns the pro game. Second rounder Thompson and 3rd rounder Schobel fill needs and are good players.

2002 COLTS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(11) DWIGHT FREENEY DE SYRACUSE
2(10) LARRY TRIPPLETT DT WASHINGTON
3(9) JOSEPH JEFFERSON CB WESTERN KENTUCKY
4(8) DAVID THORNTON OLB NORTH CAROLINA
6(10) DAVID PUGH DT VIRGINIA TECH
6(11) JAMES LEWIS S MIAMI (FLA.)
6(32) BRIAN ALLEN RB STANFORD
7(9) JOSH MALLARD DE GEORGIA

Unbelievable. Is there any more overrated GM in this league than Bill Polian? Remember, this is the guy who traded away the best RB in football (Marshall Faulk) for a 2nd and a 5th. Stunning. Freeney is 3-4 OLB, not an end. He redeemed himself a bit with Tripplet, but did little else.

Grade C+

Took Freeney way too high. Three years from now Polian will look like a genius because of Tripplet, but Freeney will be backing up Mike Peterson.

2002 CARDINALS DRAFT PICKS

RD(PK) NAME POS SCHOOL
1(12) WENDELL BRYANT DT WISCONSIN
2(17) LEVAR FISHER LB NORTH CAROLINA STATE
3(16) JOSH McCOWN QB SAM HOUSTON STATE

4(15) NATE DWYER DT KANSAS
5(14) JASON McADDLEY WR ALABAMA
6(13) JOSH SCOBEY RB KANSAS STATE
7(12) MIKE BANKS TE IOWA STATE

Cards are so lucky to get Bryant here. A real quality player who will make a difference in the defense. Fisher is a good athlete, and Johnson and Dwyer were undervalued by other teams. Solid choices all around.

3(17) JAMES ALLEN OLB OREGON STATE
4(27) KEYUO CRAVER CB NEBRASKA
5(15) MEL MITCHELL FS WESTERN KENTUCKY
6(14) JOHN THOMAS "J.T." O'SULLIVAN QB CALIFORNIA-DAVIS
6(24) JOHN GILMORE TE PENN STATE
7(13) DERRIUS MONROE DE VIRGINIA TECH
Saints avoid the temptation of Haynesworth and Buchanon and stick with Stallworth. He'll be an impact player right away. Grant was overrated but they got him in the right spot. They loved Bentley all along and he'll be a solid player for them. Big questions about Craver, but again they didn't pay too much.

5(17) NICK GREISEN MLB WISCONSIN
6(16) WESLY MALLARD OLB OREGON
7(15) DARYL JONES WR MIAMI (FLA.)
7(34) QUINCY MONK LB NORTH CAROLINA

Giants move up when they didn't have to and get their man. Dumb for Giants give up a fourth round pick when there was no way Titans were going to trade down to Seattle's spot. Giants panicked because they thought Seahawks were after Shockey. They really wanted Hanynesworth. Carter is very raw and they took him way to high. Shockey saves a very poor draft class.

5(16) JAKE SCHIFINO WR AKRON
6(15) JUSTIN HARTWIG OG KANSAS
7(14) DARRELL HILL WR NORTHERN ILLINOIS
7(29) CARLOS HALL DE ARKANSAS

Who would have thought they could get Haynesworth this deep in this draft? A great choice and an excellent fit. Williams fills a big need. Calmus is not very athletic. The rest of the pickse were very solid.

4(24) DARNELL SANDERS TE OHIO STATE
5(6) ANDRA DAVIS MLB FLORIDA
7(16) JOAQUIN GONZALEZ OT MIAMI (FLA.)

In the end, Browns make the right pick. Green is the better pure runner than TJ Duckett. Davis is an excellent WR in round two. I really like Floirda's Davis and Gonzalez late. Waited a bit too long to take a TE, but Sanders is a good one. This draft could push Browns into the playoffs next year.
